Gangs of New York, A Film Analysis :: Film
Bill the Butcher was the ideal "bad guy" for a movie. He was a stubborn individual who would not change his ways of thinking for anyone. If you came off a boat and tried to settle in the United States you were automatically hated by Mr. Cutting. Bill was a tall man, very skinny, and he had long hair with a matching mustache. Bill and his party believed that the only rightful people to have jobs, families, and make money were people who were born in the U.S., not immigrants. Women and children are not even spared by Bill and his rugged party. They hatred for the immigrants was so strong that they would shout profanities at them or hurl rocks at them when they unloaded from the massive ships. At times they would beat an immigrant close to death just because they looked at them the wrong way. Cutting's father installed these beliefs into him, Bill's father was killed in a gang war with the immigrants and he would never live that down. The way the immigrants were treated by some of the townspeople made some of the immigrants become very poor. Shop keepers and other store owners would not hire immigrants mainly because they did not like them and secondly that they did not want to upset Bill and his gang. Immigrants would soon leave New York and look for an easier life but most remained behind and lived in the side streets to fend for food with the rats. This is where thievery came in. Since most of the immigrants were poor they had to learn to steal to survive. "Pick-Pocketing" became the most famous means to steal in the streets of New York. The immigrants who would come off of the boats had no idea what was in store for them as they unloaded their boat. The immigrants were friendly people for the most part, they were not looking for a fight in America just a new start to their life.

Historical Changes of Affirmative Actions
Affirmative action was established to practice equal employment opportunity. Moreover, in general, it is a catchall phrase that refers to laws, customs, and social policies. It intends to ease the discrimination between majorities and minorities by giving more opportunities for diverse demographic groups in various social organizations. Also, it refers to both voluntary and mandatory efforts practiced by federal, state, local governments, private employers, and schools to overcome discrimination and to urge equal opportunity into the educational system and working environments (Stephanopoulos and Edley 1995). On the other hand, it is criticized and discussed since it was established due to its has very broad influences in America society. It is not simply a legal issue, but also an issue that affects every Americanâ⬠s way of life. However, itâ⬠s just like other laws and regulations, none of them can please all kinds of people. I am a supporter of the affirmative action. Some may say that this is because I am a student, and I need affirmative action to protect my opportunity of finding jobs in the future; unfortunately, they have the wrong thought. I am Taiwanese, and I will find my job in Taiwan where there is no regulation like affirmative action. Therefore, I am standing at a very objective position to discuss this topic with you. Of course, you can always keep you opinions in minds, but please open your minds to look at what I am going to tell you. I. The historical changes of affirmative action Affirmative action was first seen at 1961. President John F. Kennedy referred to his executive order that asked all federal contractors treat the applicants and their employees ââ¬Å"without regard to their race, creed, color or national originâ⬠(Pasour 1989). In 1964, affirmative action expanded its scope to prohibit employment discrimination by large employers, having over 15 employees, whether they have government contracts or not. In addition, from 1965 to 1967, affirmative action was expanded to require all government contractors and subcontractors to take it to expand job opportunities for women and minorities. Then, from 1970 to 1973, legislators evaluated and compared the affirmative action this program and status quo and made this program have more flexible goals and timetables for every organization to achieve it. II. I-200 & Proposition 209 V. S. Affirmative Action When I heard that Washington and California have passed Initiative 200 (I-200) and Proposition 209, which are regulations that against affirmative action, I think the residents of these two states may not clearly realize what the affirmative action really is. These regulations were passed because the supporters believe affirmative action has gone too far to protect minorities and women. Furthermore, the affirmative action causes reverse discriminations, preferential treatments, and privileges at not only work places but also schools. Proponents of I-200 and Californiaâ⬠s proposition 209 also argue that affirmative action has led American colleges and universities to use racial and ethnic as criteria to select a significant fraction of their entering classes. They also argue that because of affirmative action, companies may hire less qualified minorities or women instead of best-qualified white males. I cannot agree! If those are true, why are most of the top level managers white males? Besides, why are women getting lesser pay than men have when taking charge of the same duties? According to the report of the Federal Glass Ceiling Commission in March 1995, ââ¬Å"a large proportion of minorities and women are locked into low-wage, low-prestige, and dead-end jobsâ⬠(Murrell and Jones). The Glass Ceiling Commission reported that ââ¬Å"97 percent of senior managers at the Fortune 1,000 corporations were white malesâ⬠(Morin and Warden A01). Also, in 1998, women were earning 75% of menâ⬠s salaries base on the same kind of job, said by Jim Hose, a Human Resource Professor of Eastern Washington University. The general pattern of male-female relations continues in modern societies. An example like Home Depot Inc. , ââ¬Å"it was suited by EEOC in 1997 because it hired women into low-level jobs, such as cashier, with little chance for advancement into sales or management positionsâ⬠(Lerner D3). The evidence shows that affirmative action is still needed due to societyâ⬠s unequal status. Most importantly, opponents argue that affirmative action causes reverse discrimination, and that is not true. A statistic shows that ââ¬Å"fewer than 100 out of 3000 discrimination cases filed actually involved reverse discrimination and only six out of 100 cases were trueâ⬠(Wilson 1995). When the U. S. overnment stars to practice affirmative action, it creates broader opportunities for all populations instead of only for white men. At this point, white males may have some impact on them, but the affirmative action is still needed when you consider society as a whole. Another issue has been brought out by advocators of I-200 and Proposition 209, that affirmative action leads schools to select candidates unfairly. However, universities do not just look for racial and ethnic diversity when composing a class. Universities may reject some white students, but the reasons are absolutely not simply about racial and ethnic issues. According to the date, which is based on 1996 applications for ten public Virginia universities, ââ¬Å"show those universities selected applicants would consider about race, sex, SAT scores, class rank, and high school grade point averagesâ⬠(Mcqueen A13). Affirmative action is the regulation that ensures everyone in America has fair chances in every organization. Why did legislators established affirmative action? Is it because of historical discrimination of white people against African Americans? This notion gives those opponents a very big chance to criticize affirmative action. They argue that discrimination between blacks and whites has become history; therefore, we should not have affirmative action to deepen prejudice or recall everybodyâ⬠s attention to racialism. Has our society become equal without discrimination? I donâ⬠t believe that someone is so naive to think so. Perhaps those critics just donâ⬠t want to face the truth of the status quo. There was an example on ABC news, which filmed two men that have the same education, age, appearance, and other qualities, However, one is African American and another is white. While the white got full service in shoes store, got a lower price and better financing plan for buying a car, the African American got opposite treatments. Thus, when you think that affirmative action is enough, please consider what the real world is. The truth is that there is pervasive racism in all areas of U. S. society. IV. Four-fifth rule/Quota and Affirmative action The most common argument about the affirmative action is that many people believe that affirmative action leads organizations to not hire the best-qualified people due to some quota restrictions, such as the four-fifth rule. The four-fifth rule means ââ¬Å"adverse impact exists if the selection ration for the discriminated-against group is less than four-fifths (or 80 percent) of the selection ration for the majority groupâ⬠(Ledvinka and Scarpello 143). These opponents of affirmative action argue that some affirmative action practices have involved the use of preferential treatment and privilege to achieve workforce diversity that destroyed the purity of assessing candidates. At this point, I am not going to say that there is no company that likes what they have described, but the problems occurred due to misunderstanding of those regulations. What we say about the Four-fifth rule, or simply say quota restriction, is a goal set by government for every organization to follow. So far, there is no company which hires employees base on BFOQ (Bona fide occupational qualification), that has been charged because of not reaching the goal of the Four-fifth rule. ââ¬Å"True affirmative action does not enshrine preferences or mandate quotas. Nor has any effective affirmative-action program ever been structured to allow unqualified candidates to take jobs over the qualifiedâ⬠(Redwood 136). Everyone can have goal. By setting a good goal for yourself, even you canâ⬠t reach it, you are still going toward right direction. The affirmative action and Four-fifth rule as like. V. How do you identify the term ââ¬Å"Best-qualifiedâ⬠? Can you give the ââ¬Å"best-qualifiedâ⬠a definition? No, I canâ⬠t. Actually, by using ââ¬Å"best-qualified,â⬠this phrase is usually very subjective. Different employers have different considerations under their ââ¬Å"best-qualifiedâ⬠catalogs. Tom may be the best-qualified candidate for company A, but may not be eligible for company B. Also, ââ¬Å"Employers have traditionally hired people not only on test scores, but on personal appearance, family and personal connections, school tiles and on race and gender preferences, demonstrating that talent or desirability can be defined in many waysâ⬠(Kivel 1996). As we know, many job opportunities are heard from informal networks, like friends, family, and neighbors. If there is no affirmative action to ensure that everyone has a fair chance at what is available, the segregation between different groups, such as black and white, men and women, will become more and more serious. VI. Affirmative Action creates diversity for our environment Affirmative action helps organizations to find diverse and talented employees. America is a diverse country; therefore, if your company has more diverse employees, your company can get various ideas, information, and knowledge to enhance your competition. Many companies, such as Mountain Bell, have commented that ââ¬Å"by instituting affirmative action, they not only made their employee population look like American, which is a diverse country, but also found more talented and skilled workersâ⬠(Pendleton and Douglas 1991). Another example for supporting affirmative action is the Aire Sheet Metal, which its president, Bobby Bramlett, said that ââ¬Å"affirmative action creates opportunities with contractors who otherwise wouldnâ⬠t know us, or give us a chanceâ⬠¦ The work comes through relationships, but that first opportunity to build a relationship comes from affirmative actionâ⬠(Spencer 151). Therefore, affirmative action can let companies have various personnel to enrich companiesâ⬠overall human resource and enhance companies competitive capacities. In conclusion, I just want you to recognize what affirmative action really is. Affirmative action ensures that everyone in America has an equal chance to compete with others. It is a law to minimize the gap between blacks and whites, men and women. Although affirmative action may have some impact to white males, we still need this law to balance our society by considering the society as a whole. Affirmative action is good for overall U. S. society, especially, when people can combine those diverse powers together. Affirmative action is a long-term benefit for the U. S. society. I believe every American should support this regulation.

East of Eden Essay Criticism of East of Eden - 1228 Words
Criticism of East of Eden Possibly the best piece of criticism I discovered was an essay by Joseph Wood Krutch. Krutch begins by making a statement praising the enormous amount of energy that is required for a book with the scope of East of Eden. Very briefly, Krutch summarizes the novel and draws an analogy between it and The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann. Krutch points out that in this novel, Steinbeck has avoided falling into the trap of writing a melodramatic as he has in some other pieces. Krutch says of Steinbeck: Never, I think, not even in The Grapes of Wrath, has he exhibited such a grip upon himself and his material. (Krutch 370) Krutch points out that, especially in the first third of the book, the characterâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In this extremely well written review, Webster shows us how Steinbeck, for the first time, writes about humans with a sense of morality and dignity instead of naturalistic subjects of society. (Webster 370) Webster points out how even though characters are supposed to be all good or all bad; a sense of possible change is always lingering about them. (Webster 370) In close, Webster states that East of Eden is a sprawling narrative full of unguided life and... a novel that convincingly demonstrates that he is still one of the most important writers of our time. (Webster 370) The last two reviews I used were found it a rather unlikely place, Dave Cymbalisty, in an Amazon.com user review was able to shed a light that I did not discover on my own and I found in no other critical review. Cymbalisty called the novel overall Deadly realistic, as beautiful and revolting as is the actual human potentiality for good and evil. (Amazon) then continues on to compare each of the major characters in the book to a character temperament we see in our own lives. He shares my own feeling of inadequacy when attempting to summarize this vast epic story. Smoking Habits Free Essays
Substance Abuse Paper HCA 250 September 30, 2012 Substance Abuse Paper I topic I have chosen to discuss is about the dangers of smoking tobacco at young age into adulthood. Smoking Tobacco is the leading cause of premature death in smokers and it has been linked to death of non-smokers which is known as second-hand smoke. Just like Alcohol and drug abuse, smoking tobacco is used for many reasons for example simply being cool, to fit in, peer pressure, and my parents do it. We will write a custom essay sample on Smoking Habits or any similar topic only for you Order Now Now letââ¬â¢s discuss the reason why smoking tobacco is dangerous to the smokers and non-smokers. The reason for smoking is psychological, because the way smoking is glamorized in the movies and also in advertisements. This is not the real reason one chooses to smoke; the addiction is due to the nicotine which makes it hard to quit once one has started. One can overcome his or her addiction, when the psychological reasons for smoking are eliminated. The reasons people chose to start smoking tobacco was to show he or she is not timid or afraid, because his or her friends do it, to look cool, to act grown-up, sign of rebellion, parents are smokers, role models smoke, because of advertisement, for weight loss, and to reduce anxiety. The effects of smoking in the workplace can lead to unscheduled smoke breaks, absenteeism, involuntary smoking, second-hand smoke, higher insurance premiums, increased chances of lung cancer in non-smokers and smokers, heart disease in non-smokers and smokers, effects the fetus of a pregnant worker, and irritation of eyes, headaches, nasal discomfort, cough, sore throat, or sneezing. To help employees control his or her smoking habit should begin with restricting smoking in the workplace. By doing this it helps promote a healthy program in the workplace. Considering that exposure to tobacco smoke is a health hazard that many face on a daily basis. Therefore some would agree that this exposure should be addressed, therefore making it a workplace health program for all non-smoker and smokers. In order to help employees control his or her smoking habits is to introduce a smoking policy. When this policy is introduced it should be enforced at all times by smokers and backed by all employers and employees. A company can also help those who want to stop smoking by offering fitness and nutritional counseling, exercise classes, and organized sports activities. The relationship between mental health and tobacco can be good and bad. People with Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder receive a calming effect from the nicotine. Although nicotine provides a calming sensation short term, in the long term it can cause mental illness and other health issues. Some people begin to smoke because of depression, although once he or she try to quit they are likely to experience an episode of major depression. One can also experience insomnia, irritability, frustration, anger, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, decreased heart rate, increased appetite, and weight gain. In conclusion smoking tobacco can cause serious damage to every organ in oneââ¬â¢s body. It is very harmful to the lungs and the cardiovascular system, this becoming the leading cause of premature death in smokers. It also causes other diseases such as: heart disease, lung cancer, emphysema, peptic ulcer disease, and a stroke. References Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (1991, June). Leadership a Critical Perspective
Question: Discuss about theLeadership a Critical Perspective. Answer: Introduction: The importance of a leader in an organization cannot be understated, yet there is no gain saying that each leader possesses a set of important qualities that is critical to the success of an organization. It is important to take note of some of the most important qualities that define a leader, and distinguishes him from any ordinary person. The first and foremost important feature of a leader is effective communication skills. As far as the quality of communication skills is concerned, it should be remembered that a leader is required to possess interpersonal as well as intrapersonal communication skills. The leader needs to state his views, explain the importance of his ideas, and yet listen to the opinions of his subordinates, in order to take a successful decision (Bhatia et al., 2013). Having a directive, assertive style, and a polite gesture are two important qualities for a leader. It should be remembered that a leader is the one who formulates the effective strategy, the implementation of which determines the success of an organization. However, what is the meaning of a strategy if its benefits and immediate importance to an organization cannot be explained to the employees? Hence, effective communication skills are important qualities for a leader to possess, as these skills help him deliver his message and idea s (Riggio Tan, 2013). Again, in order to motivate the employees to perform a task, or to explain to him where the problem lies, he must be a powerful communicator. Besides, interacting with the colleagues and subordinates, a leader must engage in intrapersonal communication as well, whereby through introspection and self-reflection, he will be able to take relevant decisions (Arnold Bloggs, 2015). The importance of motivation cannot be overemphasized as far as the success of an organization is concerned. It should be remembered that it is the duty of a leader to be able to continually encourage and motivate his subordinates, so that even the less capable ones can also gain the inner strength necessary to combat the challenges of the professional world. Even when a team is losing, if the leader is capable of keeping his composure, he can bring an enormous amount of energy and positive vibes among the team members, and boost the morale of his followers, thereby leading to the success of a project (Peng, 2014). It is important to understand that each leader plays the role of a role model before his subordinates, and since he will be setting an example to be followed by others, he must be a man of values and integrity. A fraudulent leader, who intends to climb the staircase of success by cheating, will never be able to command the respect of the subordinates. A leader is not someone who believes in ethical lapses, or shortcuts. He should be an exemplary figure, highlighting the importance of hard work, strong willpower and a great focus, through his acts. A leader must always be the one who is rectifying the mistakes of others, and hence he must be demonstrating the ideals of honesty and integrity through his action. When a leader behaves honestly, and his single act reflects transparency, his subordinates will also be motivated, and derive great pride from being part of a team that relies on ethical principles. In addition, the integrity of the leader helps the subordinates achieve a sense of clarity about their role and mission in the organization (HinkinSchriesheim, 2015). While imagining a leader, none expects a man who will be dilly-dallying while taking a decision. Determination and clarity of thought are the two important words that define a leader. Hence, decision-making capacity is an important quality that characterizes a leader. It should be remembered that a leader is the one who will guide and lead the followers, and hence he must be able to decide the right thing at the right time. A leader should not be the one who easily loses confidence, when encountered with complex challenges. He must be the self-assertive, witty and confident thinker, who is capable of thinking discreetly, and taking up the quick decision at the right moment. Being analytical is an important aspect of the decision-making aspect of the leader. He must not be confounded by a complex situation, but should be capable of breaking down a difficult situation step by step, get an overview of the situation, and think critically, before formulating and implementing an idea. Ther e is a variety of decisions that a leader is required to take in an organization, yet he must keep his cool, retain his composure, and conduct sufficient research, before taking a final decision (Pettigrew, 2014).
